Matching Grants
Local Lions Clubs provide help for people in financial need in their local communities with the cost of purchasing glasses, exams and surgeries. NC lions, Inc. provide matching grants for this important community based service.
Organ & Tissue Donation
Since the 1950’s the Lions have been instrumental in educating the public of the need for donation. People of all ages and all walks of life are waiting for life-saving transplants. There are over 114,000 people on the national waiting list and 3,600 waiting in North Carolina. They have names and faces and lives that they are trying to hold together as they wait for a transplant. In 2013, more than 28,900 people began new lives thanks to organ transplants and to individuals like you who chose to register to donate.
Recycling
Lions fulfill the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle environmental message by reducing landfill debris through reuse or recycling. In addition to benefiting our environment, funds raised by our recycling activities support our service efforts.
Benefits of Recycling
- Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators;
- Conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals;
- Prevents pollution caused by reducing the need to collect new raw materials;
- Saves energy;
- Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change;
- Helps sustain the environment for future generations;
- Helps create new well-paying jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries in the United States
Used Eyeglasses
The collection of eyeglasses for recycling is an on‐going, year‐round program involving Lions throughout North Carolina. Reusable plastic frame glasses are sent to a Lions Recycling Center where they are cleaned, tested, classified and sent abroad to medical missions and welfare agencies for redistribution. Metal frame glasses and scrap metal are sold to a refinery and the redeemed cash is used to help fund the needs of the visually impaired.
Hearing Aids
Lions accept donations of old hearing aids. Any make or model, regardless of age, can be donated. The donated hearing aids are sold for salvage value and the proceeds are used to support the deaf blind retreat held at Camp Dogwood each year.
Cell Phones
Lions accept donations of old cell phones. Any make or model, regardless of age, can be donated. The donated phones are sold for salvage value and the proceeds are used to support the programs and services of the Lions.
